On January 26, 2022, Mazda proudly announced that it had started production at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant (MTM) in Huntsville, AL. It was a landmark day for the company, signaling not only the successful beginning of the $2.3 billion joint venture partnership but also the launch of the all-new 2023 CX-50, the first Mazda model off the line at MTM.
Up to 300,000 vehicles are expected to be built annually between the two MTM partners, with the plant employing up to 4,000 workers.
"This is an exciting day for both MTM team members and MNAO employees to celebrate the first CX-50 to roll off the Discovery Line at MTM," said Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "The production of the CX-50 here signifies the importance of the North American market to Mazda and our commitment to investing in the U.S."
2023 CX-50 Brings the Mazda Experience to New Terrain
Mazda is renowned for delivering premium driving experiences at mainstream price points. And with its newest crossover, the company blends its refined accommodations, peerless style, and outstanding driving dynamics with the capability to explore beyond the asphalt.
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 includes Mazda's latest i-Activ AWD® and Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) technology with drive modes to enhance confidence and capability on more rugged terrain. It also offers outdoor-oriented attributes to support intrepid exploration, including high-strength roof rails, reinforced b-pillars and door jambs, and an elongated cargo area optimized for easy storage of outdoor gear.
The CX-50 will be offered with either a Skyactiv-G 2.5 naturally aspirated engine or Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine at launch. Power specifications are yet to be released, but they're likely to match the similarly-equipped CX-5. We expect the standard 2.5-liter engine to make 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque and the 2.5-liter turbo to produce 227 hp and 310 lb-ft (or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with 93 octane fuel). Mazda has also stated that the CX-50 will offer electrified powertrain options in the coming years.
